What Even Is An EQ?
I’ve been listening to music my whole life.
I had no idea what I was doing.
I was hearing everything,
but not really listening.
There’s a little slider panel called an equalizer that sits quietly in almost every music app,
every speaker, every pair of headphones and for the longest time
I either ignored it completely or moved things around randomly hoping something would sound better.
It never really did.
So I went and actually figured out what it does. This is that post.
🎧 What is EQ actually changing?
Every song is made of frequencies.
Not in a complicated way, just think of it like layers.
- Low frequencies → bass, depth
- Mid frequencies → vocals, instruments
- High frequencies → sharpness, clarity
EQ lets you control these layers.
You’re not changing the song,
You’re deciding which parts of it stand out more.
🎚️ Reading the Equalizer

This is a flat EQ.
Everything is set to the middle.
Nothing is boosted. Nothing is reduced.
This is how the song was originally balanced.
Now look at it from left to right:
- Left side → low frequencies (bass)
- Middle → mid frequencies (vocals, instruments)
- Right side → high frequencies (clarity, sharpness)
Each slider controls one part of the sound.
Move it up → you hear more of that part
Move it down → you hear less
🎛️ How to actually use EQ
Most people do one thing wrong.
They push everything up.
That doesn’t improve the sound.
It just makes everything louder in a messy way.
Start simple.
Keep everything flat.
Then adjust one thing at a time.
Here’s an easy way to think about it:
If something feels missing,
don’t increase everything — find what’s missing.
- If the song feels heavy → reduce bass
- If vocals feel unclear → increase mids
- If the sound feels dull → increase highs
Small changes are enough.
🎵 Example 1: Lukka Chuppi — Recommended EQ

This song doesn’t need heavy tuning.
It already has a very soft, emotional balance.
So instead of changing it too much,
the goal is to support what’s already there.
🎵 Example 2: Ilahi — High Frequency Focus

This song feels open.
Light. Airy. Free.
A big part of that comes from the high frequencies.
The guitar, the background textures,
the sense of space all live there.
🎵 Example 3: Malhari — Low Frequency Focus

This song is built on impact.
You don’t just listen to it
you feel it.
The drums, the rhythm, the energy
all of it comes from the low frequencies.
So here, the goal is simple:
make the beat stronger without losing clarity.
Final thought
You don’t need perfect settings.
You don’t need to understand frequencies in numbers.
You just need to listen a little more carefully.
Every song is built differently.
Some need depth.
Some need clarity.
Some just need space.
EQ doesn’t change the song.
It changes how you experience it.
And once you notice that,
you won’t just hear music anymore.
You’ll start understanding it.
